Each November, blue wildebeest move down from Angola onto the open grassland of Liuwa Plain, gathering in their thousands as the rains arrive and the plain turns green. It is Africa’s second-largest wildebeest migration, and it takes place across a park of 3,660 square kilometres with almost no other visitors in it.

The herds draw predators with them — Liuwa’s wild dog, hyena and lion are part of what makes the season worth timing a trip around. The best general viewing runs from August to December, with the wildebeest arrival from November.
