Victoria Falls presents a spectacular sight of awe-inspiring beauty and grandeur on the Zambezi River, forming a natural border between Zambia and Zimbabwe. The Kololo called it Mosi-oa-Tunya — “The Smoke that Thunders” — for the immense spray and noise of the falling water. The falls are 1,688 metres wide and 108 metres high, and the mist they raise can be seen from more than 20 kilometres away.

Several vantage points give different views of the water, among them the Knife-edge Bridge, Livingstone Island, Devil’s Pool and the Lookout Tree. The falls run at full power in March and April, when heavy spray can limit viewing from the ground. Clearer views come between May and September as the water volume drops, and from October to December levels are at their lowest, revealing the basalt cliffs behind the curtain of water. The falls lie about 11 kilometres from Livingstone along Mosi-oa-Tunya Road.
